Description
Domaine Denis Mortet Les Champeaux comes from four small plots of eighty-year-old vines that Arnaud Mortet ploughs by horse.
Les Champeaux sits high on the slope at the northern end of Gevrey-Chambertin, on the Brochon border next to Les Evocelles, and its eroded limestone walls under creepers and wildflowers make it one of the prettiest vineyards in the commune. The soils are very stony with red clay and the mother rock lies close to the surface, so vines here work hard and berries stay small. Domaine Denis Mortet farms four plots totalling half a hectare, with vines now around eighty years old, and works them with a horse rather than a tractor. The combination of altitude, thin soil and old vines gives a wine with ripe, concentrated fruit carried on the freshness and fine-boned finesse that the high, cool northern end of the appellation produces. Very little is made.
Give it five to eight years and expect twenty. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, venison or a mature hard cheese.
