Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Denis Mortet Mes Cinq Terroirs is the estate’s super-Gevrey, drawn from five village plots chosen by Denis Mortet for their soils and their old plant material, and bottled here in magnum.

All five vineyards lie at the higher, northern end of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, which is what gives the wine its finesse. En Motrot sits between the church and the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin, close to Clos St-Jacques; Au Vellé lies nearby under Petits Cazetiers; Combe-du-Dessus is at the top of the Brochon slope just north-east of the village; En Champs sits directly below the Premier Cru Champeaux and carries vines over seventy years old; and En Dérée lies below En Champs on the Brochon border. Only 20 per cent new barrels were used and a third of the fruit was destemmed. The wine has long been the domaine’s calling card among its village bottlings, and in a blind line-up it would pass for Premier Cru from a good address.

Give it at least five years, and longer again in magnum. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, mushroom dishes or a mature hard cheese.
