Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs 2023

Mes Cinq Terroirs is Denis Mortet's village Gevrey-Chambertin drawn from five plots at the higher, northern end of the appellation.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest of the Côte de Nuits communes and covers a wide range of sites, so a village wine stands or falls on where the fruit is grown. Denis Mortet chose these five plots for the quality of their terroir and plant material, and the domaine, now run by his son Arnaud, has kept the selection intact. They are En Motrot, between the church and the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin near Clos Saint-Jacques; Au Vellé, close by under Petits Cazetiers; Combe-du-Dessus, at the top of the Brochon slope north-east of the village; En Champs, directly below the Premier Cru Champeaux, where the vines are over seventy years old; and En Dérée, below En Champs on the Brochon border. The northern position accounts for the finesse. One-third of the fruit was destemmed and only 20 per cent new barrels were used.

Give it at least five years and expect it to hold well beyond that. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast duck, game birds or mushrooms on toast.
