Domaine Denis Mortet Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot 2019

Mortet's Clos de Vougeot comes from 0.32 hectares of vines more than sixty years old, sitting directly below the holdings of Château de la Tour.

The Clos de Vougeot is the largest grand cru of the Côte de Nuits, some fifty hectares enclosed by a medieval wall and divided among dozens of owners, so its wines vary as much with the grower and the position on the slope as with the vintage. The upper section drains freely; the lower ground near the road holds more clay and can be heavier. Mortet's vines lie in the lower part of the Clos, immediately beneath those of Château de la Tour, but they are among the oldest and most attentively farmed in the whole vineyard. François Labet of Château de la Tour, not a man given to easy compliments, has told Bibendum that Mortet's example consistently finishes at or near the top of the comparative tastings held there. The style is floral and fine rather than broad.

Give it five to eight years and expect it to hold for two decades. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom and beef pie or aged Comté.
