Description
Domaine Denis Mortet's Echezeaux comes from a leased quarter-hectare of fifty-year-old vines in En Orveaux, the parcel of the grand cru that adjoins Musigny.
Echezeaux is the large grand cru above Vosne-Romanée, made up of eleven separate climats whose characters differ considerably. En Orveaux lies at the north-western corner, higher and cooler than the rest and sharing a boundary with Musigny, which tends to give wines of perfume and fine bone rather than sheer power. Denis Mortet built the domaine's reputation at Gevrey-Chambertin, and since 2006 it has been run by his son Arnaud, whose style has moved towards lighter extraction, a portion of whole bunches and less new oak than in the estate's earlier years. This is only the fourth release of the grand cru under the Mortet label. Arnaud works the parcel by horse, which avoids compacting the soil on a small and steeply set site.
Best given five to eight years and good for twenty. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pheasant, beef fillet with mushrooms or a soft washed-rind cheese.
