Description
Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Carte d'Or is the house's classic sweet Chenin Blanc from the schist slopes of the Layon valley, here in a half bottle.
Coteaux du Layon follows the Layon river south of Angers, where Chenin Blanc planted on schist and sandstone ripens late and takes on noble rot in the mists of a good autumn. Domaine des Baumard is based at Rochefort-sur-Loire, the family has grown vines in Anjou since the seventeenth century, and Florent Baumard now runs the estate, which also holds parcels in Savennieres and Quarts de Chaume. Carte d'Or is picked in successive tries and fermented slowly in temperature-controlled tank rather than barrel, so the fruit stays bright and the schist character shows through. This bottling carries 92.3 grams per litre of residual sugar and is sealed under a stelvin-luxe screwcap.
Honeyed but clean-lined, it is an easy match for fruit desserts, foie gras or blue cheese, and the half bottle suits a small table; serve at around 8 to 10 degrees.
