Description
Domaine des Baumard Le Petit Paon Doux is a sweet Chenin Blanc from Anjou, bottled in a 500 millilitre format under screwcap.
The Baumard family has farmed in Anjou since the seventeenth century and the estate at Rochefort-sur-Loire is now run by Florent Baumard, best known for his Savennieres, Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume. The vines sit on the schist soils of the Layon valley south of Angers, where late ripening and autumn river mists allow Chenin Blanc to build sugar either through noble rot or by shrivelling on the vine. Picking is done in successive passes, pressing is slow, and fermentation runs cool in stainless steel with no oak at any stage, stopping with 88.8 grams per litre of residual sugar. Baumard was an early adopter of screwcap for sweet wines.
Sweet, uncomplicated and fresh, it is a good aperitif or dessert pouring and works with fruit tarts and soft cheeses; serve well chilled at around 8 degrees.
