Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru 500ml 2019

Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru is a sweet Chenin Blanc from the only grand cru in the Loire, offered in a 500 millilitre bottle.

The Quarts de Chaume vineyard runs to about forty hectares of schist on a south-facing bend of the Layon at Rochefort-sur-Loire, sheltered from northerly winds and regularly blanketed by autumn mist, which is what allows noble rot to develop so consistently. Classified grand cru, it is the Loire's only such site, and the appellation rules require very low yields and picking in successive passes so that only botrytised or shrivelled Chenin Blanc berries are taken. Domaine des Baumard, whose family has worked in Anjou since the seventeenth century, is one of the principal owners. The wine ferments slowly in tank without oak and is closed under a stelvin-luxe screwcap.

Concentrated and built to last, it is best with foie gras, blue cheese or fruit-based desserts, or kept for the cellar; serve at around 8 to 10 degrees.
