Description
Domaine des Carlines Poulsard Côtes du Jura is made from the pale-skinned red grape that is a speciality of the Jura and is grown almost nowhere else.
Poulsard, known as Ploussard in and around Pupillin, has very thin skins with little colour in them, so even after a full fermentation on skins it gives a wine so light in the glass that it is often taken for a rosé. It ripens early and is prone to disease and to poor fruit set, which keeps yields low and makes it a difficult grape to farm. The Jura has kept it because nothing else behaves quite the same way. The vines grow on grey marl in the Revermont hills, and the Côtes du Jura appellation covers the length of the region between Salins-les-Bains and Saint-Amour.
Serve lightly chilled at 13 to 14 degrees, which suits it far better than room temperature, with charcuterie, roast poultry or mountain cheese.
