Domaine des Chirats Syrah 2022

Domaine des Chirats Syrah is a spicy, cool-climate Syrah from Sonoma County, made with a northern Rhône sensibility.

Yves Cuilleron, a leading grower in Condrieu and Saint-Joseph, is associated with this wine, working alongside Californian winemaker Jeff Cohn. His home ground is steep granite hillside, where the grape shows its most peppery, aromatic side, and the idea is to bring that feel to Californian fruit. The county's cooler, fog-touched sites suit a restrained, savoury approach, with freshness, spice and fine tannin ahead of oak or weight.

Expect dark berries, black pepper and a savoury, medium-weight palate. A brief decant helps it open. Serve at 16–18°C with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, roast duck, or mushroom and lentil dishes.
