Description
Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru is an assemblage of four premier cru parcels, brought together because frost and hail left too little wine to bottle them separately.
Beaune's premier crus run in a long band across the slope above the town, and Domaine des Croix, where David Croix works from cellars in Beaune itself, holds parcels in several of them. This cuvée draws on four: old vines in Les Cent Vignes planted between 1955 and 1968; a plot of 1930 vines in Les Tuvilains on brown clay and marl; Les Grèves, planted in 1968 on brown clay with the gravelly grèze litée; and Bas de Teurons, in the centre of the appellation. The parcels together cover a little over two hectares, but the crop came to only four barrels, the equivalent of 4.5 hectolitres per hectare. The wine was fermented with roughly twenty per cent whole clusters and bottled unfiltered.
Finely drawn and already expressive, with the frame to hold for some years yet. Serve at 16–18°C with roast duck, coq au vin or a mushroom tart.
