Description
Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Cents Vignes is drawn from four parcels of old vines planted between 1955 and 1968, spread across both halves of the vineyard.
Les Cent Vignes is among the first vineyards you meet heading west out of Beaune. It divides unofficially into two: an upper slope of brown clay and gravel, the fragmented scree the Burgundians call grèze litée, and a lower section on well-drained alluvial soils. Domaine des Croix farms just over a hectare in total across four plots on both terroirs, planted in 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1968, which makes this one of the older vine holdings in the domaine's Beaune range. David Croix included 25 per cent whole bunches in the fermentation, keeping them at the bottom of the vat so they were not broken up during punch-downs, and the wine was raised with very little new wood in the manner of the rest of the cellar.
Drinking well from two or three years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck or a mushroom and lentil braise.
