Description
Les Cent Vignes is one of the first Premiers Crus you meet heading west out of Beaune, and Domaine des Croix farms four parcels of old vines across it.
Beaune has more Premier Cru land than any other village in the Côte d'Or, and Les Cent Vignes is unofficially divided into two: an upper slope of brown clay and gravelly grèze litée, and a lower part of well-drained alluvial soils. David Croix works parcels on both, just over a hectare in total, planted in 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1968. Around half the crop was fermented as whole bunches, kept at the bottom of the vat so they stayed intact during punch-downs, and part of the vineyard was left untrimmed in a tressage trial rather than hedged. The wine is fine-boned and strongly perfumed, with a fresh palate that argues for Beaune as seriously undervalued.
Drink from now through the next ten to twelve years. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast duck, veal or a mushroom tart.
