Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves 2022

Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves comes from a single organically farmed parcel planted in 1968, immediately alongside the celebrated Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus.

Les Grèves is generally reckoned the heartland of Beaune and typically gives the appellation’s deepest and longest-lived reds. David Croix farms just 0.30 hectares of it, an old parcel on brown clay soils shot through with gravel, sitting next to the best-placed section of the slope. The vines have been worked organically for over a decade. This vintage was vinified with 50 per cent whole bunches and matured without any new oak at all, a choice that leaves the fruit and the site unmasked; the whole-bunch component brings freshness and perfume rather than weight. The wine was not shown to critics on release, as it was reduced and awaiting racking at the time, which says something about how the estate prioritises the wine over the review cycle.

Deep and layered, and best given five to twelve years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised lamb shoulder or a plate of soft cheeses.
