Description
Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Tuvilains is the densest of the domaine's Beaune crus, from two parcels of vines planted in the 1930s.
Les Tuvilains lies in the southern part of Beaune on the lower slope, where the soils carry more clay than the thin, gravelly ground higher up, and the wine reflects that with more flesh and grip. The vineyard joined the Domaine des Croix range with the 2016 harvest, bringing the tally of Beaune terroirs worked by David Croix to ten if the village parcels are counted. His 0.36 hectares are split across two plots, both planted in the 1930s, so the vine material here is among the oldest at the estate. The fruit was fully destemmed and the wine matured for fifteen months with 10 per cent new oak. Jasper Morris MW offers a suitably macabre account of how the vineyard got its name in Inside Burgundy.
Worth three or four years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, duck confit or a mushroom and barley stew.
