Description
Domaine des Croix Grand Cru Corton Les Grèves is a red grand cru from the mid-slope of the Corton hill, farmed organically since the estate bought the parcel.
Corton is the only red grand cru of the Côte de Beaune, a broad hill shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses and subdivided into named climats of markedly different character. Les Grèves lies mid-slope with an ideal south-easterly exposure and is widely held to be one of the finest red terroirs on the hill, its soils reddish clay peppered with the Jurassic limestone known locally as Ladoix, plus a scatter of flint. Confusingly, David Croix also farms a Beaune premier cru of the same name; both are serious sites in their own communes. He bought 0.55 hectares of vines planted in 1960 here in 2009 and has farmed them organically ever since. Around 30 per cent whole bunches went into this vintage, adding lift and a savoury edge to the deep, iron-inflected fruit.
Rich in dry extract and worth ten years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, hare in red wine or aged Comté.
