Description
Domaine des Croix Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Peuillets is grown on a sandy stretch of clay-limestone that gives the wine its finesse.
Savigny-lès-Beaune sits in a side valley off the main Côte de Beaune slope, and its Premier Crus divide between the cooler Pernand side and the warmer, Beaune-facing side. Les Peuillets belongs to the latter, lying just below Les Marconnets and sharing a boundary with Beaune's Blanche Fleur; it is the vineyard on the left as you enter the valley towards the village. The domaine tends a single parcel of 0.57 hectares planted in 1971. A good deal of sand runs through the argilo-calcaire soil here, and that lighter soil profile is largely responsible for the wine's fine-boned structure and its core of sweet red and dark cherry fruit. David Croix works with used oak and restrained extraction throughout the range.
Approachable young and good for eight years or so, it suits roast chicken, charcuterie or grilled salmon. Serve at 16-18°C.
