Description
Domaine Didier Dagueneau Blanc Fumé de Pouilly Ex-Négociant is the only wine in the range that is not tied to a single soil type or site.
Pouilly-Fumé sits on the right bank of the Loire opposite Sancerre, on a patchwork of flint, limestone and marl, and the late Didier Dagueneau rebuilt its reputation from his base at Saint-Andélain; the estate is now run by his son Benjamin. This cuvée is drawn mainly from two vineyards away from the Saint-Andélain slope: a parcel of vines more than twenty years old on flinty clay, and another in the lieu-dit Les Coques on limestone and marl, blended with young-vine fruit from Le Bois de Saint-Andélain. It is the most direct and accessible of the domaine's wines, and its standard has risen sharply under Benjamin. Fermentation takes place in a mix of new barrels, about 20 per cent, and casks of three to four years, with maturation split between wood and tank.
Drinking well now and capable of five to ten years, as Dagueneau's wines generally are. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled whiting, chèvre or a smoked trout salad.
