Description

Domaine Didier Dagueneau Le Mont Damné is a Sancerre from half a hectare on the chalk slopes of Chavignol, and only twelve bottles were shipped.

Chavignol lies in the western hills of Sancerre, and Les Monts Damnés is its most famous slope: brutally steep, south-facing, and planted on white terres blanches packed with chalk. Didier Dagueneau, whose home ground was across the river at Saint-Andelain, had long wanted to make a Sancerre from this hillside, and in the late 1990s he was able to buy half a hectare near Gérard Boulay’s Comtesse parcel and plant it to his own specifications. The historic name of the climat within Les Monts Damnés is Les Vignes Blanches, a reference to those calcareous soils. Despite the steep aspect, the domaine regards it as one of the cooler corners of the vineyard, which shows in the wine’s line and its capacity to age. Very little is made and it is rarely exported.

Give it two or three years and expect it to hold for ten. Serve at 10-12°C, in a broad glass, with roast poultry, crab or Crottin de Chavignol.
