Domaine Didier Dagueneau Vin de France Buisson Renard 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Didier Dagueneau Buisson Renard, in magnum, comes from a cool mid-slope parcel of clay and flint that the estate rates above its more famous Pur Sang.

Buisson Renard is a cool mid-slope site on the south-western side of the Saint-Andelain hill, where the soils mix clay with flint, the silex that gives the wines of Pouilly their firm, smoky cast. The vineyard was historically called Buisson Menard, and so was the wine, until a writer reviewed it as Buisson Renard: renard is fox and buisson is bush, and Didier Dagueneau was so amused by the accidental fox bush that he adopted the mistake from the following vintage. The estate now prices this above Pur Sang, which says plainly how highly it rates the site. The wine is fermented in barrel and matured in the bespoke cigar-shaped casks of 450 and 600 litres that Dagueneau had made, a shape chosen to increase lees contact while limiting the influence of new wood. Magnums are made in very small numbers.

The format will slow it down, so give it three or four years and cellar with confidence. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or hard goat’s cheese.
