Description
Domaine Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang comes from La Folie, a stony south-facing vineyard at Saint-Laurent-l’Abbaye that nobody else wanted.
Pur Sang means thoroughbred, and the name began as Didier Dagueneau’s retort to writers who could not stop mentioning that he ploughed this site with a horse; the first label carried a horsehide rug. The fruit comes from La Folie, a densely planted vineyard of thirty-year-old vines at Saint-Laurent-l’Abbaye. Locals thought the purchase mad, as the land had not been under vine within living memory and was full of boulders and awkward to work, but it had long ago been part of the appellation and Dagueneau saw what it offered: flint and silica-rich clay, and slopes facing south to south-east. It is also the birthplace of Astéroïde, the ultra-rare cuvée made from eighteen rows of ungrafted vines and almost never exported. The wine is fermented and raised in the estate’s bespoke cigar-shaped barrels.
Best given two or three years and good for a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C, in a Burgundy glass, with turbot, roast chicken or a mature Comté.
