Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Les Marsaules 2021

Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Les Marsaules is a single-vineyard Cabernet Franc from one of the estate's older parcels.

Les Marsaules is a named site within Bourgueil worked by the Gauthier family at Benais, where the soils shift from gravel toward clay over the tuffeau limestone that underlies the whole appellation. Older vines on that clay and limestone give small berries and a firmer, more mineral expression of Cabernet Franc than the terrace plots. Farming is organic, with ploughing in place of herbicide and a hand harvest. The grapes are destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeast, macerated slowly in vat, then given an extended elevage in seasoned barrels so the tannin settles without picking up new oak character.

Serious and structured, best with roast lamb, beef, game or aged cheese, and worth decanting. Serve at around 17 degrees.
