Description
Domaine Dugat-Py Monthélie Très Vieilles Vignes is a red Burgundy from the village tucked into the hills behind Volnay.
Monthélie sits in a fold of the Côte de Beaune between Volnay and Auxey-Duresses, sharing the same limestone slope as its more famous neighbour but sitting slightly higher and more exposed. It has spent its history in Volnay's shadow, which is precisely why growers of standing still find value there. The vines behind this bottling are very old, and old vines crop lightly without persuasion. Bernard Dugat-Py and his son Loïc work from cellars in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, part of which occupy a medieval tithe building. The domaine is small, farmed organically and known for severe crop levels. The fruit is hand picked and sorted, fermented in small lots and aged in oak in the domaine's cellars in Gevrey.
Serve at about 15 to 16 degrees with roast duck, pork or mushroom dishes; it will keep comfortably for several years.
