Description
Domaine Dugat-Py Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Gains" is a white Burgundy from high on the slope of one of the great white wine villages of the Côte de Beaune.
Les Champs Gain climbs the upper part of the hillside at Puligny-Montrachet, above the run of premier crus that lead towards Montrachet itself. The topsoil there is thin and the hard limestone close to the surface, so the vines work for their living and the wines tend towards tension rather than breadth. Sites at the top of the slope were once thought the lesser ones; warmer growing seasons have altered that view. Dugat-Py is best known for the reds of Gevrey-Chambertin, where Bernard and his son Loïc farm organically from cellars partly housed in a medieval tithe building. The whites are pressed in whole bunches, fermented and matured in barrel, and made in very small quantities.
Serve at about 12 degrees with oysters, grilled fish or roast poultry; several years in the cellar will suit it.
