Description
Domaine Faiveley Beaune 1er Cru 'Clos de L'Écu' is a red Burgundy from an enclosed premier cru on the slope above the town of Beaune itself.
Beaune has more premier cru land than any other commune in the Côte d'Or, and much of it lies on the hillside immediately above the ramparts and the merchants' cellars. Clos de l'Écu is one of the walled vineyards there, farmed by Faiveley, whose own cellars are at Nuits-Saint-Georges. The house was founded in 1825 and has been run by the same family for seven generations, with Erwan Faiveley taking charge in 2005; since then the winemaking has moved towards gentler extraction and a lighter hand with new oak. The Pinot Noir is sorted carefully, fermented in small batches and matured in French oak barrel.
Serve at around 16 degrees with roast duck, game birds or coq au vin; it drinks well from about five years and holds a good deal longer.
