Description
Domaine Faiveley Clos De Vougeot Grand Cru is a red Burgundy from the walled vineyard that is the most famous single enclosure on the Côte de Nuits.
The Clos was assembled and walled by the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, and the château at its centre still stands. Its fifty hectares run from the top of the slope down to the main road, and the soil changes markedly over that distance, which is why the vineyard is now shared among some eighty owners and why the position of a grower's rows within the Clos matters so much. Faiveley, at Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1825, is among the long established holders. Fruit is vinified parcel by parcel and matured in French oak barrel.
Decant and serve at around 16 degrees with game, beef or a hard mountain cheese; it asks for a decade in the cellar and will hold far longer.
