Description
Domaine Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a Chardonnay from the great domed hill of Corton in the Côte de Beaune, a Grand Cru that still carries the name of an emperor.
Corton-Charlemagne occupies the upper slopes of the hill, curving through the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny, where pale marl over hard limestone and a cool, high aspect suit Chardonnay better than Pinot Noir. Tradition holds that Charlemagne owned vines here and had white planted so that spilt wine would not show in his beard, and the vineyard has carried his name ever since. Faiveley has been based at Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1825 and is now in its seventh generation, with Erwan Faiveley at the helm since 2005. The whites are whole-bunch pressed, fermented and matured in barrel with restrained new oak, then aged on fine lees.
A wine for turbot, roast chicken or aged hard cheese, served at about 12 to 13 degrees. It repays a decade or more in the cellar.
