Description
Domaine Faiveley Échézeaux 'En Orveaux' Grand Cru is a red Burgundy from one of the largest grand crus in the Cote de Nuits, drawn from a single climat at its highest, coolest corner.
Echezeaux lies in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux, alongside Vosne-Romanee, and is unusual among grand crus in being a patchwork of separately named climats rather than one continuous block. En Orveaux sits at the upper, north western end, close to the Combe d'Orveaux, where the altitude is greater, the soils thinner and the harvest a little later than on the vineyards below. Faiveley has been in the same family since 1825, when the house was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges, and it is now one of the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, with holdings from Chablis down to the Cote Chalonnaise. Extraction is careful and the wine is raised in oak barrels, a proportion of them new, as befits the appellation.
This is a wine for the cellar and rewards a decade or more; when opened it suits game, truffle dishes and roast beef, served at about 16 degrees.
