Description
Domaine Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru "Le Clos du Roy" is a Pinot Noir from one of the historic Premier Cru climats of Mercurey in the Côte Chalonnaise.
Mercurey is the largest appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise and its most serious address for Pinot Noir, with a long roll of Premiers Crus spread across the communes of Mercurey and Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu. Clos du Roy, the king's enclosure, is one of several climats here whose names recall medieval and royal landholding, a reminder that these hills were farmed long before the appellation was drawn up in 1936. The soils are limestone and marl much as on the Côte d'Or, though the ground is higher and more broken. Faiveley, founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825, has been the leading landholder in Mercurey for generations.
Serve at around 16 degrees with roast pork, charcuterie or a hearty casserole. It will keep for five to eight years.
