Description
Domaine Faiveley Montagny Blanc is a Chardonnay from the southernmost appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise, an area given over entirely to white wine.
Montagny covers four communes south of Chalon-sur-Saône, Montagny-lès-Buxy, Buxy, Saint-Vallerin and Jully-lès-Buxy, and is unusual in Burgundy in permitting nothing but Chardonnay. The vineyards lie on rolling limestone and marl hills at a slightly higher elevation than the Côte d'Or, which keeps acidity firm and the harvest late. An unusually large share of the appellation carries Premier Cru status, the result of a historically generous delimitation rather than any strict ranking of slopes. Faiveley was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 and is now in its seventh generation, with holdings and long experience throughout the Côte Chalonnaise; the whites are whole-bunch pressed and raised with little new oak.
Serve well chilled, at about 10 to 12 degrees, as an aperitif or with oysters, grilled fish or goat's cheese.
