Description
Domaine Faiveley Pommard 1er Cru 'Les Rugiens' is a Pinot Noir from the most highly regarded Premier Cru in Pommard, named for the rust-red iron in its soil.
Les Rugiens sits at the southern end of the commune, on the Volnay side, and is divided between an upper section, Rugiens-Hauts, and a lower one, Rugiens-Bas, the latter long argued to deserve Grand Cru status. The reddish, iron-rich clay and limestone that gave the vineyard its name lend Pommard the firm, sturdy character for which it has been known for centuries. The commune makes red wine only and has no Grand Cru. Faiveley, founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 and now in its seventh generation, picks by hand, sorts twice and ages in French oak barrels, a measured proportion of them new.
Serve at around 16 to 17 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game. It needs time and is at its best from about eight years.
