Description
Domaine Faiveley Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Gain" is a Chardonnay from high on the slope in Puligny-Montrachet, one of the great white wine villages of the CĂ´te de Beaune.
Champ Gain lies at the upper edge of the Premier Cru band, above Les Folatières, on thin, stony, strongly calcareous soil where the vines work hard and ripen a little later than those mid-slope. The name points to ground gained from waste land and cleared for the vine. Puligny shares the Grands Crus of Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet with neighbouring Chassagne and holds Chevalier-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet within its own boundaries. Faiveley, founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 and now in its seventh generation, has steadily expanded its white wine holdings in the Côte de Beaune; the whites are whole-bunch pressed, barrel fermented and aged on fine lees.
Serve at 12 to 13 degrees with fine white fish, scallops or roast poultry. It rewards five to ten years in the cellar.
