Description
Domaine François Chidaine Le Chenin d’Ici is made exactly as the estate cuvées are, from a roughly even split of purchased and estate fruit.
Le Chenin d'Ici began as a response to a difficult season, when François Chidaine lost sixty per cent of his crop and approached contacts across Touraine to secure small parcels of Chenin Blanc. It has since become a fixture of the range. The wine works out as roughly half purchased and half estate fruit, and includes grapes from a number of the domaine's own parcels across Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire, which is unusually good material for a wine at this end of the list. It is made in the same way as the estate cuvées: fermented with native yeasts and aged in used 600-litre barrels, so the wood contributes texture rather than flavour. What results is dry, fleshy and chalky, with the close-grained white peach and citrus core that runs through Chidaine's Chenin at every level.
Drinking now and good for five years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled fish or a mature Cheddar.
