Description
Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Clos du Breuil is a dry Chenin Blanc from a single three-hectare clos on one of the highest points of the appellation.
Montlouis-sur-Loire lies on the south bank of the river opposite Vouvray, working the same Chenin Blanc on a slightly sandier version of the local geology, and François Chidaine has done as much as anyone to establish it as Vouvray's equal. Clos du Breuil is a single site of three hectares sloping towards the Loire, close to Clos Habert and among the highest ground in the appellation. The soil is clay and coarse flint over limestone subsoil, the type locally called les perruches. Some of Chidaine's oldest vines are here, up to 90 years, with an average age of about 50. The fruit is hand-harvested with several passes through the vineyard, and the wine ferments naturally in 620-litre demi-muids over a period of up to 11 months, giving texture without overt oak.
It will drink well for a decade or more, and suits scallops, roast pork or a mature goat's cheese. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
