Description
Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Les Choisilles is a dry Chenin Blanc named after the black flint that runs through the parcels behind it.
Montlouis-sur-Loire faces Vouvray across the river and works the same tuffeau limestone bedrock, though the appellation spent a long time in its neighbour’s shadow. François Chidaine has done as much as anyone to change that. Les Choisilles takes its name from the local word for the black flint that is abundant in its vineyards, chiefly Les Epinais, La Taille aux Loups and Clos Renard. The bedrock across all three sites is tuffeau, and vine age runs from 30 to 90 years. Chidaine’s view is that these deep-rooted old vines transmit the character of the flint in the topsoil, giving the wine its fine, chalky cast. It is made dry, which is the house default in Montlouis and increasingly the norm for the appellation as a whole.
Drinking now and capable of ten years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a soft goat’s cheese.
