Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Les Epinays by Pierre Chidaine 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

Les Epinays is a Montlouis-sur-Loire Chenin Blanc made by Pierre Chidaine, son of François, and is bottled only in magnum.

Montlouis sits on the left bank of the Loire opposite Vouvray, on the same tuffeau limestone but with lighter, sandier topsoils. Les Epinays is a lieu-dit near the hamlet of Husseau, where this small plot of 60-year-old Chenin is rooted in the local aubuis clay, littered with large flints on the surface, with roots running down into cool, damp tuffeau subsoil. The southern exposure of the plot accounts for the wine's natural richness and aromatic concentration even in a cool, late year such as 2021. Pierre Chidaine raises the cuvée in a combination of glass Wineglobe vessels and old oak barrels, which keeps the fruit clear while building a little texture. The wine is dry, crystalline and taut, with orange blossom and anise, a mouthcoating middle and a long, saline, stony finish. Quantities are tiny.

Drink from now over the next eight to ten years, with grilled fish, pork rillettes or a soft goat's cheese. Serve at 10–12°C.
