Description
Domaine François Chidaine Baudoin is a dry Chenin Blanc from the historic Clos Baudoin in Vouvray, bottled as Vin de France.
Chidaine is based in Montlouis, across the river, and bought Clos Baudoin in 2001, converting it to biodynamics immediately. Because he also farms in Montlouis, the Vouvray authorities have declined to grant the appellation to his wines from this side of the Loire, so they are labelled Vin de France; the fruit and the site are unchanged. The clos runs to 2.7 hectares on the crest of a hill above the surrounding country, with an average vine age of more than 70 years. The soils are clay and chalk over a deep tuffeau subsoil. Compared with the more approachable Les Argiles, this is a dense, tightly wound wine, and the finish carries the salty, rocky character the site is known for.
Worth three to five years and capable of far longer. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, scallops or a plate of aged goat's cheese.
