Domaine François Chidaine Vin de France Baudoin 2024 Vouvray

Domaine François Chidaine Vin de France Baudoin Vouvray comes from the Clos Baudoin, one of Vouvray's most storied vineyards, though it is bottled as Vin de France.

Chidaine, whose home base is Montlouis on the opposite bank, took on Clos Baudoin in 2002 and set about restoring the soil and converting the site to biodynamics. Because he farms on both sides of the river, his Vouvray wines are labelled Vin de France rather than under the appellation. The clos covers 2.7 hectares on the crest of a hill above the surrounding country, with an average vine age of over seventy years, planted on clay and chalk over a deep tuffeau subsoil. Compared with the more approachable Les Argiles cuvée, this is a deep, tightly coiled and densely packed Vouvray that makes the quality of the site obvious. It is raised in demi-muids more than ten years old, so the oak plays no flavouring role.

Give it three to five years, though it will run much longer. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, scallops or a mature goat's cheese.
