Description
Domaine François Chidaine Rive Droite is a botrytised sweet Chenin Blanc from the Vouvray side of the Loire, released as Vin de France.
Chidaine is based in Montlouis-sur-Loire but also farms across the river in Vouvray, and because of a long-running appellation dispute those Vouvray wines are labelled Vin de France. Sweet cuvées from the domaine are made only in years that allow them, and this one is rarer than the Montlouis liquoreux. It was made from hand-selected botrytised grapes picked in the L'Espagnole and L'Homme vineyards. Fermentation was extremely slow, running well over a year before it stopped, and the wine finished with 130 grams per litre of residual sugar. It was then held in the cellar for 13 years before release. The style is concentrated but built on brightness and energy rather than weight, with botrytis giving grip and Loire acidity keeping the finish clean.
Ready now and capable of decades in bottle. Serve at 8-10°C with foie gras, a blue cheese, or a tarte tatin.
