Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre à Chavignol 2024

Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre à Chavignol is the only blended cuvée in the range, and it includes young-vine fruit from three of the appellation's star sites.

Boulay's entry-level Sancerre comes entirely from the limestone of Chavignol, from mature vines of thirty-five to fifty years of age. The parcels are mostly slopes on the Chavignol hillside terroirs of Les Chasseignes, Les Longues Fins and La Rue de Veaux, which distinguishes the wine from the bulk of Sancerre, grown on the more fertile and productive soils of the plains. Fruit from younger vines on the celebrated terroirs of La Grande Côte, Clos de Beaujeu and Monts Damnés also goes into the blend. The juice ferments spontaneously and rests for eight months on lees in tank, with a small volume in a single large wooden cask. Boulay's proposition is that Sauvignon Blanc here works as Chardonnay does in Burgundy, as the messenger rather than the message, and this wine bears that out at the least expensive point in the range.

Ready on release and good for five years or so. Serve at 10-12°C with goat's cheese, grilled prawns or a herb omelette.
