Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre La Côte 2022

Domaine Gérard Boulay's La Côte comes from the La Grande Côte hillside on the edge of Chavignol, the coolest terroir at the domaine and the last picked each year.

La Grande Côte, sometimes called La Côte d'Amigny, is a south to south-east-facing hillside above Chavignol on pure Kimmeridgian limestone. Boulay first bottled his parcel on its own in 2010, and it has quickly become one of the heavyweights of the range. Because the site is cool, the fruit comes in last, and the combination of late picking and limestone gives density with unusual precision. The vines are a good 20 years old, still young by this domaine's standards, yet they already express the site with real intensity. The wine is vinified and aged in three- and four-year-old barrels, so oak plays a supporting role only. Beside the Monts-Damnés bottling, La Côte is the more expressive and open of the two, though it keeps the tension and mineral character that mark everything Boulay makes, and it closes long and chalky.

Good now but better with three to five years. Serve with grilled langoustines, roast chicken or a goat's cheese soufflé at 10–12°C.
