Domaine Gerard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts-Damnés 2020

Domaine Gerard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts-Damnés comes from a 40-degree, south-facing plot on the most famous slope in Chavignol.

Chavignol is the hamlet within Sancerre most associated with texture and length, and Les Monts-Damnés is its best-known vineyard, named for how punishing it is to work. Gérard Boulay's plot lies on one of the steepest inclines of the hill, a south-facing parcel of 45-year-old vines on terres blanches, the white Kimmeridgian clay and limestone that gives these wines their salty grip. The parcel sits directly next to Edmond Vatan's Clos la Néore. The wine was fermented and aged in three- to four-year-old Tronçais casks from the Rousseau cooperage, then finished its élevage in larger cask before bottling. Because the site is one of Chavignol's warmest, the challenge is ripeness without heaviness, and the wine holds that line, offering weight and texture with the tension intact.

Rewarding now but will gain from five to eight years in bottle. Serve at 10-12°C with Crottin de Chavignol, roast pork or grilled Murray cod.
