Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts-Damnés 2023

Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts-Damnés is drawn from a forty-degree, south-facing plot on the steepest part of Chavignol’s most celebrated vineyard.

Sancerre sits at the eastern end of the Loire, and within it the hamlet of Chavignol has long been the reference for textural, mineral versions of the appellation. Monts-Damnés is its best-known slope, and Gérard Boulay farms 45-year-old vines on one of its sharpest inclines, a south-facing parcel on terres blanches, the white chalky clay and limestone that gives these wines their spine. The plot sits directly alongside Vatan’s Clos la Néore. Being one of the warmest sites in Chavignol, the fruit ripens fully, and Boulay works to keep that ripeness in balance with tension. The wine is fermented and raised in three- to four-year-old Tronçais casks bought from Domaine Rousseau in Gevrey-Chambertin, then finished in larger cask before bottling, so the oak builds texture rather than flavour.

Approachable now but built to gain over five to eight years in the cellar. Serve at 10-12°C with sashimi, ceviche or grilled scallops.
