Description
Domaine Goisot Saint-Bris Corps de Garde Blanc is made from Fié Gris, the old local name for Sauvignon Gris, part-fermented in old 500-litre barrels.
Saint-Bris is the one appellation in Burgundy given over to Sauvignon rather than Chardonnay, sitting in the Auxerrois between Chablis and Auxerre. Fié Gris, known elsewhere as Sauvignon Gris, was once widely planted around Auxerre, but it is fickle and yields on average 35 to 40 per cent less than Sauvignon Blanc, which all but finished it off. The Goisots persevered, and their old vines of it now grow in the red-brown clay and limestone of the Côte de la Canne, Cornevin and Moury vineyards, farmed biodynamically. Unlike the estate's Sauvignon Blanc bottlings, this one is partly fermented and raised in old 500-litre barrels, which gives it more weight and a phenolic grip at the finish. It remains one of Burgundy's genuine oddities.
Drinking well now and good for four to five years. Serve at 11-12°C with grilled prawns, roast chicken or a smoked trout salad.
