Description
Domaine Goisot Corps de Garde is a Saint-Bris made entirely from Fié Gris, the old local name for Sauvignon Gris.
Fié Gris was once widely planted around Auxerre, but it is fickle and low yielding, cropping on average 35 to 40 per cent below Sauvignon Blanc, and it has all but disappeared from the region's vineyards. The Goisots kept theirs, and their old vines now grow in the rich red and brown clay and limestone soils of the Côte de la Canne, Cornevin and Moury vineyards. The variety gives a broader, more textural wine than Sauvignon Blanc, which is why the domaine handles it differently: unlike the Sauvignon Blanc cuvées, this bottling was partly fermented and raised in old 500-litre barrels. It remains one of the more unusual whites in Burgundy, and a long-standing favourite of the importer.
Drinking now and worth five years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, smoked fish or a semi-hard goat's cheese.
