Domaine Guffens-Heynen Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et Les Vieilles de Chavigne 2022

Domaine Guffens-Heynen Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et Les Vieilles de Chavigne pairs a young parcel planted in 2003 with a barrel or two from the domaine's oldest vines.

Pierreclos lies in the hills west of Mâcon, and Guffens-Heynen has done more than any other estate to argue that its Chardonnay belongs in serious company. This cuvée follows earlier releases in 2016, 2018 and 2020 and centres on the parcel Jean-Marie Guffens calls Juliette. Planted in 2003 into soil so poor and stony that the grower himself wonders how the vines cope, the plants were stunted by the heat of their first summer and have since given small, intensely flavoured crops with high natural acidity. To that base Guffens adds a small proportion of juice from the Chavigne terroir, where the vines are now 80 to 90 years old and bring depth and breadth. The blend is matured for 18 months in barrel, longer than most wines at this appellation level, which knits the tension of the young vines to the substance of the old.

It rewards a few years in the cellar and will hold for a decade; try it with roast chicken, grilled prawns or aged Comté at 10-12°C.
