Description
Domaine Guffens-Heynen Croux et Petits-Croux is drawn from two rocky plots at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson that together cover barely a quarter of a hectare.
Pouilly-Fuissé lies in the far south of Burgundy, in the Mâconnais, where Chardonnay grows on limestone below the great rocks of Vergisson and Solutré. Jean-Marie Guffens and Maine Heynen founded their domaine at Vergisson in 1976 and built its reputation on very low yields, late picking and long lees ageing, at a time when the region was known chiefly for cooperative wine. This cuvée comes from two south-facing sites at the base of the Roche de Vergisson: the walled Clos des Petits Croux, which runs to 0.098 hectares, and a slightly larger 0.1525-hectare slice of the neighbouring Les Croux lieu-dit. William Kelley has written in the Wine Advocate that these vineyards have produced one of France’s greatest wines since the 1980s, and wines compelling enough to unsettle received ideas about Burgundy. It is not made every year.
Worth three to five years and capable of a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a mature hard cheese.
