Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc, in magnum, is Chenin Blanc from the chalky slopes in and around Brézé, with vines planted between 1935 and 2012.
Saumur's white wines come off the tuffeau limestone that runs beneath the Loire east of the town, and the Brézé hill is its most celebrated outcrop. Romain Guiberteau draws this cuvée from younger vines in Clos de Guichaux and Clos des Carmes, along with older vines from the Bas de Pentes terroir of Brézé and a splash of Les Chapaudaises at Bizay. Clos des Carmes, sitting on the chalky mother rock just below the Château de Brézé, is among the crown jewels of the district. All of Guiberteau's whites are pressed as whole bunches and ferment with indigenous yeasts. This wine was historically vinified entirely in tank, though recent releases have been partly raised in tronconique oak vats and used barrels to broaden the texture and reduce reduction. It did not go through malolactic conversion, which keeps the acidity taut.
Drinking now with air and capable of ten years or more in magnum. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled snapper, roast pork or a washed-rind cheese.
