Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc 2017

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc is the entry to the range, drawn from three hectares of Chenin Blanc that take in both old vines low on the Brézé slope and younger plantings from the domaine's two walled clos.

Saumur Blanc is dry Chenin Blanc on clay and limestone, and Romain Guiberteau has been among its more persuasive advocates since he took over his family's vines at Mollay, in Saint-Just-sur-Dive, in 1996, with Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard as his early teacher. The estate runs to a little over nineteen hectares, farmed organically from 2000 and certified AB in 2007, with no synthetic treatments beyond sulphur, copper and essential oils. This wine comes from three parcels planted between 1935 and 2012: the older vines on the lower slopes of Brézé, together with the young vines of Clos de Guichaux and Clos des Carmes. The bunches are pressed whole, fermented on ambient yeasts with malolactic blocked, and the wine spends seven to ten months on lees in a mix of stainless steel and foudre, so there is no oak flavour to speak of.

Ready on release and it will keep developing for some years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or fresh goat's cheese.
