Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc 2021

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc draws on some of the finest limestone sites of Brézé, with plantings going back to 1935.

Saumur Blanc is Chenin Blanc grown on the tuffeau limestone of the Saumurois, and Romain Guiberteau is among the growers who returned the appellation to serious standing. This wine comes from calcareous soils in and around Brézé: younger vines in Clos de Guichaux and Clos des Carmes, old vines from the Bas de Pentes terroir of Brézé itself, and a splash of Les Chapaudaises from Bizay. Clos des Carmes in particular sits on the chalky mother rock of the Brézé hill, just below the château, and these are among the crown jewels of the region. Plantings range from 1935 to 2012, so there is a good deal of old-vine material in the blend. All the whites here are whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Historically the wine was raised entirely in tank; more recent releases are partly aged in tronconique oak to broaden the texture.

Approachable now and capable of ten years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled snapper or a Gruyère tart.
